In part 1 of this series, I shared some thoughts around the significance of our subconscious programming on our experience of the world; and I suggested that in order to transform our experience, we need to engage with our subconscious. In part 2 I outlined a key strategy; and here in part 3 I share another:

Spend more time in a state of low-frequency brain waves.

Generally speaking in daily life, we operate in the band of gamma or beta frequencies – more so than ever in this, the age of stimulation/preoccupation/anxiety. These are high frequencies. Perfect for when we are needing heightened awareness and cognition, but bearing in mind that our experience of the world is formed in the sub/unconscious, we cannot expect awareness or change if we enter habitually or remain in that mode of operation.

So we must regularly create time and space to slow the brain frequencies through whatever form of meditation works for you: I particularly recommend meditation facilitated by gongs, because it makes deep meditation accessible to even inexperienced meditators; however, there is a number of different approaches you can take. The more you train your ability to slow the brain waves, the easier and more readily it will come. In time, you will be able to access that state at will throughout the day: while you wait for something, when you're out walking, before (or during) a challenging interaction – anytime, anywhere, even if only for a couple of minutes.

Through this practise, you will find yourself much more grounded and aware of your own processes, and so in a stronger position to break patterns and create new experiences and so neural pathways.

Further, you can use these low frequency brainwave states to reprogramme the unconscious processes either using techniques at home, or with the assistance of a professional. This is the basis of hypnotherapy. I can facilitate this work for you with one-on-one gong therapy sessions, in person or online.

In part 1 of this series, I shared some thoughts around the significance of our subconscious programming on our experience of the world; and I suggested that in order to transform our experience, we need to engage with our subconscious.

In parts 2 and 3, I would like to share 2 powerful strategies you can adopt to do this. So here is the first strategy for you:

Bring awareness to, and disrupt, your trances.

We tend to enter a trance on average every 30-45 minutes. Our conscious mind goes offline. In itself, this is normal, natural, and healthy. It's down-time. And it can be a fruitful, creative, or even meditative state. However, so often it can be deeply destructive.

When we enter a trance state, our unconscious patterns can have a magnetic draw. We find ourselves entering this space for the sense of comfort, safety, and familiarity it offers; but in fact, we spend our time there reinforcing negative beliefs, thought-patterns, coping mechanisms, and imprints: re-traumatising ourselves. By doing so, we internally recreate the reality we wish to avoid, which leads to manifestation.

What can we do about this?

Bring consciousness to the behaviours of your unconscious. So when you enter a trance, notice. Then explore: am I looking for evidence or confirmation that supports my stories? What beliefs are alive here? Are they true? How might I reframe these thoughts? Can I find feelings that are contrary to the unconscious beliefs? How can I separate from the story and respond to the situation responsibly, for what it is?

This process may meet resistance. Because sometimes even if something isn't what we would dream of, at least it's familiar and we know where we are. It's safe. So you can ask further: do I identify any sensation of resistance to breaking new ground? If so, what's behind that?

Key to all of this is self-compassion. Non-judgemental listening; gentle nurturing; and soft, kind language. With clients, we talk about "compassionate mindfulness".
